Four Corners publishers visit and advice

After out talk from G.f Smith about paper in publications it was time to talk to publishers and get advice and an idea about budgets and real time management for our project swell as more ideas to incorporate to our book.

It was a shock to all of us when we found out their publishing company was run by just two people with sometime over 8 projects going on at the same time.

We got a real idea of what we could do or not in terms of budget with our publication and also fresh ideas for printing and layout. And advice to due to our budget take in consideration little details like add-ons, self-printed dust jackets, stickers and more.


Book Design Case studies – exercise 2

The second quick exercise was to take one of the texts from the anthology and change its layout, typeface, structure, hierarchy…

As we didn’t have too much time, we focused on the main things, like what was relevant and what could we remove, typeface, hierarchy such as font sizes and placing.

And the text below was the final outcome we came up with.

There’s definitely more to be experimented with and more to improve taking it to the actual final pitch, but this was a good start for it.

Book Design Case studies – exercise 1

As a quick exercise, in our groups for the anthology, we had to examine three books and compare them. Observing and recording the layout, material and structure of each of them.

What is the best size and shape, position of the text on the page, typeface choice, size and hierarchy, grids, columns, line length, position of images…

We choose three books and while one was very cheap feeling material wise, it had a good layout and content, while the other had a hard cover and looked more expensive, but the design and layout inside the book was lacking. The best example of a “good book” we had was the “MAKE IT NOW!” since it was well designed outside and on the inside while still having character. Playing with the images and text layout all around the book making it interesting and definitely giving us a few good ideas.

G.F Smith talk- Alyson Hurst

In order to understand how different publication are designed, paper decisions take a big part on it, so we had a visit and talk from Alyson Hurst to talk about how paper is used in publications rather than just the variety of papers they have in G.F Smith.

It definitely helped us to see the ways you can use paper to give character to a magazine or book. Not just by the colour of it, but the texture (embossed paper), the finish (such us coated glossy, coated matte or uncoated) and the way you print fold and bind the final publication.

My group and me definitely took everything on board and from that talk made a check list of finishes and ideas for our anthology pitch. And also, I did it on my own for my MFP ideas and development to come, since paper will always be essential for a designer.

Poems typographically represented

Since I received a series of poems as my individual part of the brief I decided to first research how could I represent them as a printed based outcome.

This are some examples I found interesting :

I could either take it through this route or use colour and text hierarchies to give a different feeling to it.

The next thing to do some research on would be motion graphics since it’s a really good way to give life to the poem in a typographic way too.

Note: As you can see, I decided to keep it typography based since that is my area of interest and not illustrated based.

Anthology Brief

Today, week 13,our studio got introduced to the new brief for the term.

The anthology brief is a life brief in which we will work alongside the English Literature and creative writing department.

An Anthology is a published collection of poems or other pieces of writing, and we are to re-design the final book.

There is two parts to this brief:

  1. The individual work

We where handed in each one an specific text, in my case a series of poems and we are to research the context, background and language and develop a visual interpretation of the text in a medium of choice. Printed (5 pieces) or screen base (animation).

2. Work in teams

there will be 4 groups that will have to compete to propose a new design for the anthology publication of this year.

The winning team will get to produce it and the other teams will help with the promotion of the launch event/exhibition

The pitch will be on week 17 and we’ll have to design it considering the budget given to print 300 copies .


It’s a very challenging brief, since we have only 4 week to prepare for the pitch and several things to research such as costs and not only design.

The individual part of the brief on the other side it’s something I find really enjoyable and useful for on portfolio and not only as a project.
